Students learn to recognize the style and mode of each piece and understand the role played by that style of music in popular culture. Each grade level is assigned a set of contemporary jazz guitar solos that are suitable for soloing in the style of the music studied in each grade. The practice routines begin with the student’s solo assignment, and include transcriptions of the solos assigned in each of the three studies, as well as “fill-in” solos, suitable for practicing the development and articulation of each of the six tones of the pentatonic scale.
