On-demand titles, pay-per-view services and web streaming via the BSkyB internet TV service are all aimed at attracting a younger audience, writes Andrew Bushard. British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) has launched its new internet TV (iptv) service, which will cost £10 per month in the UK, with a range of more than 50 on-demand services offering a variety of genres and styles of content, including sport, news and documentaries. The £10 per month subscription price is half the cost of Sky’s pay-per-view services and rival Virgin Media has previously announced similar services, but some services and titles for on-demand viewing have also been made available to Sky subscribers for no extra charge. As well as a range of on-demand content such as sport, news and entertainment, Sky’s iptv service also includes access to a range of pay-per-view services, such as highlights from Sky channels. Richard Harvey, the chief executive of Sky, says the new service will benefit from being “more familiar and less intimidating” to a younger audience. “Our iptv service will get closer to people’s lives, enabling us to reach younger audiences through the medium of their choice,” he says. Kieren McIntyre, the general manager of Sky’s internet TV service, says that BSkyB has looked at the level of interest in the market, including viewing figures, and decided that the new iptv service offers the best mix of content to attract a younger audience. “We have worked hard to develop our proposition to give viewers a TV service that fits with their lifestyles and time-frame,” he says. Some new on-demand content will be added to the service over the coming weeks and months, including news content from Sky News. The service includes the capability to access on-demand content such as sports, news, and entertainment via the BSkyB internet TV service, as well as pay-per-view services such as SkySports, SkyNews, and Sky Store. The service will be rolled out to customers over the next four to five weeks. The service will be available via BSkyB’s set top box, Sky+, and will be displayed in Sky’s TV guide.
